Whether you’re looking for a horseback riding holiday with a bit of adventure, a family vacation where even the kids will have fun, or just some place new where you can really get away from it all, you’ve found it. Sundance Guest Ranch is located in the warmest, sunniest spot in Canada with sweeping, panoramic views of the wide open Thompson River Valley. The Ranch runs a herd of over 100 happy, well-cared-for horses with thousands of acres of spectacular and varied terrain to explore.
Unique Features: Choose some wine from the list and relax as you watch the evening jingle. That’s when the horses run out to the sprawling pastures for the night. The dining room overlooks the pastures where the horses spend the night grazing. There’s not too many places left in the world where you can watch 100 horses galloping free together, it’s a sight that never gets old!
Accommodations: The ranch is on a single level and each room is accessible from a covered wooden boardwalk. “Roughing it” may sound romantic, but it doesn’t always feel so good! This is why all of the rooms are air-conditioned with full private bathrooms. The standard rooms have two queen beds, or a queen and a single bed, with space for a roll-away if required. All standard rooms feature their own en-suite bathrooms.
As Suite As It Gets: When money is no object, go for the KIng Rooms. There are three King rooms available. These rooms are larger than a standard room and feature a king-size bed. King rooms also have extra amenities including a mini fridge and coffee making facilities.
Dining: Sundance is almost as famous for the food as it is for the horses! At breakfast, help yourself to the buffet or order the daily special from the grill (specials range from strawberry-topped french toast to eggs benedict). After that, set menus will include anything from classic charcoal-grilled steaks and burgers to sophisticated international cuisine. Comfort food, kicked up a notch, is what they aim for. Vegetarians and those with special dietary requirements will also be well looked after by a talented chef!
Activities: Riders is accompanied by an experienced wrangler who will give you all the instruction you need to make your horseback experience as safe and fun as possible. They offer two rides a day, with each ride lasting 2 to 2.5 hours through some of Canada’s most amazing scenery. There’s also a game room, authentic outdoor horseshoe set, walking and hiking trails, a billiards room and a movie lounge.
Spa & Fitness: There is no on-site spa or fitness center, but with all of the amazing outdoor activities and fresh air though, you won’t need them. The ranch has an on-call massage therapist (cost not included in your package). There is also a swimming pool that is open June 1st though Labour Day weekend.
Location: The ranch is located an easy 4-hour drive north-east of Vancouver, just outside of Ashcroft, a small, quaint town with a long history. Ashcroft was founded in the 1860s, during the Cariboo Gold Rush, by two English brothers. The brothers had originally come in search of gold; however, on hearing stories from failed gold searchers they decided to found the town to give future gold searchers a place to saddle their horses. They also sold flour to packers and miners.
Closest Airport: Vancouver, BC is 4 hours from the ranch or Kamloops is 1 hour and an airstrip in Cache Creek for private planes.
Children’s Programs: Yes. Children must be at least 8 years old in order to participate in trail riding, but don’t worry, they have complimentary child-care for kids age 4 to 7 years of age, available Monday morning thru Friday morning during the months of July and August. Big green lawns for running and playing and a large, dedicated room with toys, games and crafts to keep your little ones entertained.
Pet Friendly: No. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed.
Weddings: Yes. They would be delighted to host your wedding at the ranch! The ‘Take Over the Ranch’ option allows you book the entire ranch for a 2 day package stay. Most people choose a weekend, usually Friday to Sunday.
Meetings: No. They do not have the facilities to host large business meetings.
Extra Info: The adults-only BYOB bar lounge is the center of the ranch, and over the years has been the venue for some legendary parties. The room hasn’t changed much since the 1960s with a huge stone fireplace and large bar. The lounge opens onto an outdoor deck where you can cut the dust at the end of the day and swap stories with your fellow riders before getting ready for dinner.
