Set among magnificent conifer forests, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge offers guests an unforgettable experience of the landscape and its wildlife. Vancouver Island’s celebrated luxury outpost, skirts the banks of its namesake ocean inlet, Clayoquot Sound and offers an escape to the still, tranquil beauty of Canada’s remote wilderness. Accessible only by seaplane, the journey to the lodge is symbolic of a real departure from the everyday.
Unique Features: Guests receive respectfully intimate attention from the moment they arrive via floatplane until they wave goodbye from the horse-drawn wagon carrying them back to the dock. Surrounded by pristine Crown Land and Strathcona Provincial Park, in the bio-diverse Bedwell estuary, over 600 lush and beautiful river valley acres comprise an Outpost far, far removed, remote and remarkable.
Accommodations: Luxurious Vancouver Island accommodations include 25 great, white canvas tents. These prospector-style accommodations are artfully arranged along the water’s edge, in the rainforest, and on the hillside overlooking the estuary. Each tent is unique and richly appointed with luxurious comforts that would be found at any of the 5-star resorts in Canada, including billowy duvets, antique furnishings, and propane-fueled, cast-iron stoves.
As Suite As It Gets: When money is no object, go for the Waterfront Ensuite which sleeps up to four guests. The Waterfront Ensuite offers direct views to the water and its boisterous wildlife. Each tent features a generous king bed, a double sofa bed and an outdoor deck with traditional Adirondack seating. An in-tent ensuite bathroom features heated floors, double vanity and a private outdoor cedar-clad shower.
Dining: The lodge offers contemporary style cuisine with influence from the surrounding wilderness, British Columbia’s multi-cultural community and the Pacific Northwest’s thriving culinary scene. Ingredients on the daily changing menus are mostly sustainably produced, foraged or respectfully harvested and are sourced from Vancouver Island and the greater province of British Columbia.
Activities: Six categories of adventure: equestrian, marine-based, land-based, helicopter adventures, fishing and conservation projects, are delivered by qualified wilderness guides and operators, using state-of-the-art equipment and certified vessels to ensure extraordinary, authentic adventure in regulated, low-risk environments. All packages include activities for guests of all ages, experience levels, and inclinations.
Spa & Fitness: Set along the shore of Clayoquot Sound and among the cool reserves of new and old growth forest, The Healing Grounds Spa promises guests a physical and spiritual sanctuary and a menu of signature treatments to revitalize body and soul. The secluded spa features two treatment rooms, a waterfront massage tent, a yoga and meditation room, cedar hot tubs, a sauna and tranquil outdoor lounge space for relaxing and drinking in the view.
Location: The Bedwell River Valley is in the Clayoquot Sound region on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The river flows into Bedwell Sound, which lies northeast of Meares Island and Tofino. When prospectors discovered gold in 1865, placer mining quickly swamped the valley. However, the numerous large boulders made most workings unprofitable.
Closest Airport: The easiest and quickest way to travel to Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is to fly to Vancouver, British Columbia and connect with a scenic 45-minute seaplane flight directly to the resort dock on Clayoquot Sound. Private wheeled aircraft up to Boeing 737 use Tofino (YAZ). The resort will arrange for ground transfer to Tofino, then boat transfer to the Outpost.
Children’s Programs: No, although they welcome your children, they do not have any supervised children’s programs. Due to the intimate size and nature of the resort, children must be a minimum of six years of age. Children’s rates apply to children ages 6-12 years old. Youth rates apply to youth ages 13-18 years old.
Pet Friendly: No, unfortunately pets are not allowed.
Weddings: The intimate scale of the resort prescribes privacy and a level of service and pampering unlike anything offered by large, all-inclusive resorts. The memories you make at the resort are yours alone, as unique and original as your dreams, and unfolding at a pace set by you. While pretty much anything goes, two themes dominate resort romance: Modern Natural and Wildly Traditional.
Meetings: Clayoquot Wilderness Resort can accommodate private groups for incentive and corporate travel. Whether a small gathering of 10 or 20 guests, or a larger group of 50 guests (two people per tent, 25 tents total), they offer custom tailoring, activities, meals, meetings, and transport. The resort grounds and dramatic, exotic environs lend themselves to team-building and creative inspiration, but also promise rare opportunity and luxurious reward.
Extra Info: The temperate rainforests that dominate the landscape and ecosystem at Clayoquot Sound also drive the weather systems. While the region generally receives good rains that sustain its forests, in summertime the conditions are warm and quite dry, ideal for marine sports and outdoor activities and making summer and shoulder months an ideal time to visit.
