Avalanche Ranch is best described as a Rocky Mountain Picture Post Card in the Heart of Colorado. This pastoral setting offers the beauty and peace of an earlier era. Situated at 7,000 feet, overlooking the Crystal River, with Mt. Sopris towering above at 12,953′, the views are more dramatic than you can imagine. The ranch grounds are very lush and include a variety of trees, apple and plum orchards. Designed around the natural landscape, Avalanche Ranch also features three natural hot springs pools in a tiered layout.
Unique Features: Tucked away higher up on the property is a stocked trout pond and offers premier views. Picnic at the water’s edge and check out a canoe to float in the moonlight. Have your first boating experience with the kids, show them how to fish, or let them explore the pond in the one-kid paddleboats. There are Hot Springs at the ranch and the entry fee is included in the nightly rate. The springs are closed on Wednesdays for cleaning, although they open for lodging guests Wednesday evening after 5pm.
Accommodations: The 36 acre Ranch offers plenty of privacy for the 13 cozy log cabins, 1 bedroom Loft Apartment and 3-bedroom Ranch House, the entire property can accommodate up to about 60 people. The cabins were built between 1890-1950s and since renovated. Each has a different décor. Some have woodstoves, clawfoot tubs and lofts. They range in size from a studio to 2 bedrooms and loft. A 1 bedroom apartment, the “Loft”,was added in 2008. The “Loft” sleeps up to 6 people and offers more contemporary amenities such as a flatscreen TV.
As Suite As It Gets: When money is no object, go for the Gypsy Wagon which offer you great proximity to the hot springs. Full size bed, propane heater, fan, coffee maker, towels, a charcoal BBQ grill and a picnic table. Limited Privacy; restrooms and showers are available at the hot springs. Very much like glamorous camping (glamping!).
Dining: Meals are not served on the ranch but most cabins have kitchens.
Activities: There are nearby trails for hiking and biking as well as a half mile of private riverfront along the Crystal River to walk and fish. Across the river, the valley opens up providing spectacular views. Avalanche Creek flows into the Crystal River, surrounded by forest service and wilderness land. They have cleared a hiking trail that skirts the upper boundaries of the ranch. In Winter, snowshoe, sled, ice skate and cross-country ski on the grounds or nearby trails.
Spa & Fitness: There is no spa or fitness center. Upon request though, with at least 48 hour notice, they do have a massage studio located near the Hot Springs where we can host one massage at a time.
Location: Redstone was established in the late 19th century by industrialist John Cleveland Osgood as part of a coal mining enterprise. Osgood’s coal empire also spurred construction of the Crystal River Railroad. A dominant feature of Redstone is Cleveholm Manor, commonly called “Redstone Castle,” an opulent 42-room Tudor-style mansion that Osgood built for his second wife, Swedish Countess Alma Regina Shelgrem.
Closest Airport: The nearest commercial airport is in Aspen, Colorado, approximately 45 miles away or about an hour’s drive. You will still need a car to get to Redstone from Aspen. The next closest airports are in Eagle 57 miles away and Grand Junction 115 miles away.
Children’s Programs: No. Although they welcome your children, they do not have any supervised children’s programs.
