Dartbrook Lodge is set in a beautiful valley surrounded by the mountains, lakes, gorges, waterfalls and pristine forests that define the picturesque heart of the Adirondack Park. The Lodge provides travelers with the rustic comfort of a mountain home. Furnished in the Great Camp tradition by local artisans, the Lodge has a range of accommodations, including well appointed private cottages and suites with porches, kitchens and many other unique features.
Unique Features: Keene is a town in central Essex County, New York with a total population of 1,144 as of the 2020 census. The town is part of the Adirondack Park, and includes 15 of the 46 High Peaks, including Mount Marcy, New York’s highest mountain, and the rest of the Great Range. It also includes the Ausable Lakes, the source of the Ausable River. Trailheads for many of the High Peaks are located within the town, along with the Johns Brook Lodge of the Adirondack Mountain Club.
Accommodations: They offer a variety of private cabins and suites offering luxurious amenities. Choose a private suite with full kitchen or a standard cottage. Each cabin is unique and beautifully furnished. The Woodruff Cottage features a large bedroom/living room combo with stained glass windows, gas wood stove, cathedral ceiling and dramatic front porch. The bathroom includes a slate rain shower and local handmade soaps. A portable air conditioner can be provided in the summer months upon request. A separate communal laundry facility is available for an additional fee.
As Suite As It Gets: When money is no object, go for the Owl’s Head Cottage which is a lovely two bedroom/two bath cabin with its own front porch and private front yard along Dart Brook. The largest of the cabins, Owl’s Head comes complete with a spacious great room with kitchen, dining table, and living area. There is an additional separate living room with a pull-out couch for additional guests. Enjoy the privacy of your own yard and oversized porch right along the brook that gives Dartbrook Lodge its name.
Dining: Enjoy Restaurant Forty Six. It’s a bistro-style, farm-to-table restaurant located in the heart of the Adirondack High Peaks in Keene, New York featuring local, sustainably sourced ingredients. Try the Turkey Club, Falafel Pita, Fried Chicken Sandwich, Garden Caesar, or the Macaroni & Cheese with Bacon and Peas.
Activities: So much to do! Go Zip Lining at Experience Outdoors, Lake Placid. Go River Rafting with Adirodac Rafting Co. See the waterfalls at High Falls Gorge. Be an Olympic Bobsledder for the day with the Lake Placid Bobsled Experience. Take a Drive up Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway. Go Fly Fishing in the Ausable River with Hungry Trout Fly Fishing Guides. Go Mountain Biking At Whiteface’s Downhill Mountain Bike Park. Take a tour of Lake Placid with Lake Placid Boat Tours.
Spa & Fitness: There is no on-site spa or fitness center, but with all of the amazing outdoor activities and fresh air though, you won’t need them. A wide range of outdoor activities are close at hand, including hiking, rock climbing, ice climbing, fishing, canoeing, swimming, biking, snow-shoeing, downhill and cross-country skiing and skating. The Adirondack High Peaks region is a place of uncommon and rugged beauty preserved as “forever wild.”
Location: The Lodge is on the High Peaks Scenic Trail, and Keene lies at the center of the network of hiking trails that lead to the tallest Adirondack peaks, including Mount Marcy, New York’s highest point. Keene includes spectacular mountain lakes, including Lake Tear of the Clouds, the source of the Hudson River. Running through Keene is the AuSable River, with waterfalls and secluded swimming holes.
Closest Airport: The nearest major airport is Adirondack Regional Airport (SLK / KSLK). This airport has domestic flights from Saranac Lake, New York and is 30 miles from the center of Keene, NY. Another major airport is Plattsburgh International Airport (PBG / KPBG), which has domestic flights from Plattsburgh, New York and is 42 miles from Keene, NY. urlington International Airport (BTV / KBTV) has domestic flights from Burlington, Vermont and is 48 miles from Keene, NY.

Extra Info: The area had been a stronghold with the lumber and iron industries. However, exporting items made by these industries was difficult due to lack of transportation. By around 1820 sawmills, forges and gristmills were being built. The riverbed region of Keene sprouted the first community, and Keene Flats become another by 1840. In 1882, when the Adirondack Park was created as a state protected area, a privately tolled and maintained road to lower Ausable Lake was constructed.
