Experience world class outdoor adventures, gourmet West Coast cuisine, luxurious accommodations and sumptuous spa experiences in an ancient rainforest archipelago filled with eagles, whales, bears, and more. Sonora Resort is a remote sanctuary that is surprisingly within reach, the only unexpected visitors are the abundant wildlife.
Unique Features: Notoriously elusive, grizzly bears make a rare exception in late August, September and October when they descend on the Orford River to feast on spawning salmon. The journey involves a brief boat ride up Bute Inlet, through the Arran and Yuculta rapids to the river mouth. There, by vehicle, an experienced Homalco First Nation guide takes you through lush, mossy rainforest to various viewing towers along the riverbank.
Accommodations: Sonora’s welcoming accommodations will leave you rested and rejuvenated for another day of exciting adventure that awaits you. The resort is as peaceful as it is luxurious, providing distinguished serenity in the form of private suites, cozy common areas, inviting hot tubs, and tranquil meditation areas facing quiet forests. Crafted in cedar and stone with picture windows, Sonora’s intimate suites invite the outside in.
As Suite As It Gets: When money is no object, go for the Marine Lodge. On the rocks, extending out over the water is the Marine lodge, with its navy blues and sunny yellows inspired by sailing and seafaring. Fittingly, ocean views are had from all four bedrooms, three of which include two Queen-sized beds, one of which includes a King-sized bed, all with private en-suites.
Dining: A meal at the Tyee Dining Room is a sumptuous sensory experience. With its position, facing the sea, a wilderness panorama frames every moment. On the plate is a feast for the eyes and palate. To start the day, drink in the view and a frothy cappuccino on the patio. As the sun dips lower, a custom cocktail from the bar and Dungeness crab pulled from our live tanks whets your appetite. The grand finale is a multi-course Chef’s Tasting Menu paired with the perfect wine from the Wine Cellar.
Activities: Cruise ocean channels in search of mighty Chinook. A fleet of Grady-White vessels and experienced guides leave from the docks for ocean salmon fishing stocked with everything you need to reel in a big one. Get up close but not too personal with grizzlies on a tour to see the elusive animals as they gorge on salmon. Then bike, hike and explore on shore. Sonora Island is itself a playground, and you’re free to explore it.
Spa & Fitness: Sonora Island’s natural wilderness setting surrounds this therapeutic journey where the soothing sounds of island currents have a cathartic effect on the mind, body and spirit. As the ocean currents move around this secluded island, cleansing, renewing and purifying the waters, the treatments and specialty therapies at Island Currents Spa will likewise revitalize you.
Location: Desolation Sound is a deep water sound at the northern end of the Salish Sea and of the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Canada. The sound is flanked by Cortes Island, East Redonda Island and West Redonda Island. Major provincial parks located within the sound include Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park, Malaspina Provincial Park, Okeover Arm Provincial Park, and Roscoe Bay Provincial Park.
