The Red Mountain Alpine Lodge is a beautiful custom timber frame lodge located at 11,000′ on Red Mountain Pass. Well known for its central location and impeccable access to backcountry terrain, Red Mountain Pass is at the center of the San Juan Mountains, Colorado’s most inspiring and diverse mountain range. The lodge operates year-round, and there is incredible diversity between the summer and winter months.
Unique Features: With Ouray 20 minutes to the North and Silverton only 15 minutes to the South, the positioning of the Red Mountain Alpine Lodge is both convenient and remote, allowing you to shed the hassles of everyday life and enjoy pristine backcountry right out the front door. The Highway 550 corridor is world renowned for all types of backcountry recreation opportunities and literally a lifetime’s worth of adventures await those who want to explore the area.
Accommodations: The lodge features three private rooms and a large loft for a combined sleeping capacity of 22 people. Right when you walk in through the large entryway door, you’ll experience the sensation of rustic luxury as you gaze at the amazing exposed posts and beams of the custom timber frame structure. Constructed using 19th Century tools and processes with Douglas Fir timbers, it creates the unmistakable look and feel that are the hallmarks of this type of construction, cozy, rustic, soulful.
As Suite As It Gets: When money is no object, go for the private rooms. The lodge hosts a number of premium amenities and comforts to help you relax after a great day in the mountains so that you can rest and prepare for the next! There are four flushing toilets, three showers and four bathroom sinks, radiant in floor heat, and a large living room and dining area.
Dining: A chef prepared dinners and a full American breakfast during your stay, as well as an afternoon or aprés ski soup/appetizer. Additional items such as fondue, banana bread, and cookies are also available for purchase at the lodge. A licensed on-site tavern is available and will offer a great selection of local on-tap beers as well as wine, spirits, and signature cocktails.
Activities: The Proprietors of The Red Mountain Alpine Lodge are also the owners of San Juan Mountain Guides in Ouray, Colorado, widely known as The Local Experts for climbing, skiing, and mountain guiding in the San Juan Mountains. They offer custom and on-demand ski guiding in the Red Mountain Pass area for individuals or groups of all experience and ability levels.
Spa & Fitness: There is no on-site spa or fitness center, but with all of the amazing outdoor activities and fresh air though, you won’t need them. Looking to sniff out some powder runs on some North facing trees? There are literally hundreds of acres of prime tree skiing right out the front door on both sides of highway 550. You simply cannot find better access to backcountry ski terrain in the mountain west.
Location: The Red Mountain Alpine Lodge is situated at the top of the pass at 11,000′, surrounded and enveloped by tall, healthy spruce trees but only 300 yards from Highway 550. This means you can easily access both sides (East and West) of the highway for maximum skiing flexibility. Conditions and snow stability looking good for a ski descent of one the many 13,000′ peaks in the area? The lodge is positioned right at the base of the mountains and all you have to do is set the skin track to the top.
Closest Airport: The closest airports to Ouray are Montrose Airport (MTJ, 45 miles away; Grand Junction and Durango Airports, regional airports that are 2-hour driving distances from Ouray. Denver, Albuquerque, Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs all have airporsts that are within 6 hours driving distances from Ouray.
Children’s Programs: No. In the winter they do not allow children under 7 years old. Children between 7-11 with parents will need to book a private room and not left unaccompanied. They make exceptions in the off season and special circumstances.
Pet Friendly: No. Pets are not allowed at this property.
Weddings: No. They do not normally host weddings but they may by special request.
Meetings: No. They do not have the facilities to host large business meetings.
Extra Info: Red Mountain Pass receives over 300 inches of snow per year and is one of the most reliable and deepest annual snowpacks in Colorado. Consistent storms, low moisture content, and complex layering typify the conditions in this part of the range.
