Estancia Huechahue (pronounced “way-cha-way”) is a working cattle ranch in Argentine Patagonia. Four generations of the Wood family have worked on the 15,000 acres of Patagonian Steppe to produce a self-sufficient oasis and thriving cattle operation. Patagonia is beautiful, rugged and wild. Life is always an adventure, whether you are out on the hills on horseback or on the river with fly rod in hand. Huechahue maintains traditional values and customs whilst welcoming visitors into a unique world where horses and cattle still roam free and food is home grown.
Unique Features: Huechahue is not a dude ranch, it is the real thing! The time of year determines what needs to be done but it can include round-ups, vaccinating, separating, branding, moving cattle and horses to new pastures. Herding horses at speed is magic!
Accommodations: The lodge has ten double or twin-bedded guest rooms all with bathrooms en-suite. Four are on the first floor of the lodge and the others are in two chalets a short stroll across the lawn. Each chalet includes a communal sitting room area. All of the rooms have Wi-Fi.
As Suite As It Gets: When money is no object, go for the Chalets. They have the most privacy.
Dining: Whilst staying at Huechahue, meals are usually served in the dining room of the main house and guests gather for drinks in front of the fire in the living room or watching the sunset on the terrace. Alternatively they make use of the ‘quincho,’ the barbecue room, with an open fire pit perfect for asados and celebrations.
Activities: Argentina is famous for its tremendous equine culture and arguably the best way to explore Patagonia is on horseback. You can ride through barren rolling hills and along the narrow rocky gorges of the Andean streams; to the tops of the hills where the mighty Andes rise up behind you and the vastness of Patagonia stretches out before you. Huechahue is also located at the heart of some of the finest fly fishing in South America and the world. Incredible rivers such as the Chimehuin, Alumine, Malleo, Quilquihue and Collon Cura are all easily fished.
Spa & Fitness: There is no on-site spa or fitness center, but with all of the amazing outdoor activities and fresh air though, you won’t need them.
Location: Huechahue is in northern Patagonia in Argentina. It is in the foothills of the Andes mountains close to the Argentina and Chile border. 1,600 km south west of Buenos Aires.
Closest Airport: To get to Patagonia from outside of Chile and Argentina, you need to fly into either Santiago or Buenos Aires and then take a connecting flight down to Patagonia. If you want to travel to Chilean Patagonia, fly into Santiago International Airport (SCL) (officially called Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport) in Santiago, Chile.
Children’s Programs: No. Although they welcome your children, they do not have any supervised children’s programs.
Pet Friendly: No. Pets are not allowed at this property.
Weddings: No. They do not normally host weddings but they may by special request.
Meetings: No. They do not have the facilities to host large business meetings.
Extra Info: Patagonia is a region encompassing the vast southernmost tip of South America, shared by Argentina and Chile, with the Andes Mountains as its dividing line. The Argentine side features arid steppes, grasslands and deserts, while the Chilean has glacial fjords and temperate rainforest. Argentina’s famed RN-40 highway passes the pinnacles of Monte Fitz Roy and Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park.
