Dunton is a meticulously restored ghost town with natural hot springs, just one hour from Telluride, Colorado. This perfectly restored old mining town thrives on contradictions; hand-hewn log cabins exquisitely furnished, a life-worn saloon serving food of startling quality, lung torturing trails followed by pampering massages, and sensuous hot springs beneath shimmering snow banks.
Unique Features: The infamous bank robber, Butch Cassidy, robbed his very first bank in Telluride, then is said to have escaped to Dunton where he carved his name into the saloon bar. See for yourself, when you try one of their famous martinis or opt for a local Colorado shot of whiskey. The town of Dunton’s population was less than 50 people in the mining days.
Accommodations: All of Dunton’s authentically restored log cabins are full of fascinating details. All the cabins are hand-built and, in some cases, by the original miners themselves. Lovingly restored, each possesses a distinct character. Tastefully decorated, they are full of unique artifacts and furnishings. They also have a glamping camp with luxury canvas tents.
As Suite As It Gets: When money is no object, go for the: Well House, Dunton’s only cabin built around a small, on demand hot spring, along with beautiful views of the mountains and a fire place to boot! The cabin has a king bed, private hot spring and cold plunge, wood burning stove, and bathroom with shower. Maximum number of adults is 2. Or choose the Tipping Cabin with three bedrooms and a living room. Sleeps up to 6.
Dining: The resort’s chefs draw on classical training to create a new menu every day using local and regional ingredients sourced from the farm and vineyard. Everyone eats at a long, antique table in the center of the Saloon. A tradition from the big cattle outlaws that they choose to maintain. If guests prefer however, they do have the options for guests to dine separately.
Activities: In addition to the soothing mineral hot springs on the property, the resort also has gentle horses for mountain rides, world class fly fishing on an exclusive nine-mile stretch of the West Fork of the Dolores. Perfect hiking and mountain bike trails, from easy to heart pounding. Winter is a magical time to visit Dunton. Strap on a pair of snowshoes and explore the serene San Juan Mountains.
Spa & Fitness: The Spa specializes in totally natural treatments in surroundings that can only help to relax and rejuvenate. Choose a powerful yet soothing massage and the finest essential oils to create a feeling of total well-being. Options include hot stone massages, alpen glow body scrubs, facials, or private meditation and yoga sessions.
Location: Dunton sits at 8,600 feet on the West Fork of the Dolores River in the San Juan Mountains in the southwestern corner of Colorado. Dolores is the closest town to the resort. Dolores is located at the mouth of the Dolores Valley and the upper reaches of McPhee Reservoir, approximately 40 miles (64 km) from the Four Corners Monument. There’s great fishing and boating on the McPhee Reservoir.
